MADISON TOWNSHIP ─ Madison Township is going to bid out a chip and seal road resurfacing project that will be executed on 13 roads.

The township trustees voted to advertise the bid on Monday evening. Trustee Dan Fletcher, who prepared the bid documents, said he will put an advertisement in local media on Thursday. Trustees will open the bid on March 15 in a regular meeting.

The roads that will be resurfaced are as follows:

Pat Lane

River Drive

Wade Drive

Nester Drive

Everett Lane

Leppo Road

Fleming Falls Road

Hull Road

Sites Road

Myers Road

Chew Road

Taylor Road

Keffer Road

Fletcher said the total length of roads that will be resurfaced is close to eight miles. Seven of the 13 roads are part of a joint project with Washington Township. Information about the bid will also be put on the township’s website.

During public comment, a resident asked trustees if they would put a road levy for road improvement on this year’s ballot. Chairman Trustee Jim Houser and Trustee Catherine Swank both said they have given the issue some thought but have not talked to their colleagues.

“Personally, I think it’s something we need. But I’m not sure it’s something that would pass right now with the COVID and everybody’s pretty well-strapped,” Houser said.

He also said the issue will not be put on the ballot in the primary election in early May.

Additionally, trustees interviewed four candidates for Madison Township Fire Chief on Feb. 13. The position has been open since former Fire Chief Ron Luttrell resigned in September to lead the Norwalk Fire Department.

Houser said three candidates are from Ohio, including Springfield, Mantua and the local area. One is from Virginia. The trustees interviewed the candidates with representatives from Madison Township Fire Department and Ohio Fire Chief’s Association. The association has been helping the township with taking applications and screening applicants.

According to a job posting on OFCA’s website, requirements for Madison Township Fire Chief includes at least 10 years of full-time fire service experience, with a minimum of five years as a shift commander officer.

Besides, an associate degree in fire science, fire administration, EMS administration, public safety management or a related field is desired. The salary range for this position is $65,000 to $70,000.

Houser said the hiring process is ongoing. Trustees will reach out to references and conduct a second interview with the candidates they prefer.
