GREENWICH TOWNSHIP — Four people were injured Sunday night when a car slammed into the rear of a horse-drawn buggy on U.S. 250, just north of the Ashland County line in Greenwich Township.
The Norwalk Post of the State High Patrol reported the hit-skip accident occurred at 9:48 p.m. Troopers said a 2000 Toyota Camry was southbound on U.S. 250, near mile post 19. It struck the rear of the horse-drawn buggy, which was carrying four people.
All occupants of the buggy were thrown from the horse-drawn vehicle. The Camry fled southbound and the driver and vehicle were later found in Ashland County.
Renold Workman, 58, of Vermilion, was identified as the Camry driver, troopers said. He was not injured in the crash and troopers said alcohol use is suspected as a factor in the accident.
The buggy was driven by Aaron Hoover, 53, of Greenwich. He sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene. A female passenger, Marian Hoover, 51, was injured and taken to University Hospitals Ashland. A second passenger, Luann Hoover, 15, was injured and also taken to University Hospitals Ashland. A third passenger, Mark Hoover, 11, sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
Troopers said the horse was also injured.
The patrol was assisted at the scene by the Huron County Sheriff’s Dept., the Ashland County Sheriff’s Dept., the Tri-Community Joint Fire Department, North Central EMS, Wilcox Towing and A&M Towing.
Troopers said the crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
