ASHLAND — The 31-year-old Oberlin man killed Monday evening in a three-vehicle crash was a Crestview High School assistant wrestling and football coach.
Jesse Campbell, 31, of Oberlin was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ashland County Coroner’s Office, according to the Ashland Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The accident occurred on Ohio 545 in Clear Creek Township, troopers said.
The Crestview Cougars wrestling team posted on social media Tuesday about the loss of their coach.
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of football and wrestling coach Jesse Campbell. Coach Campbell was a staple in both programs,” the post said. “He had a great drive and passion to push his athletes not just in sports but as individuals as well.
“Coach Campbell was a brother to many and a friend to all. The Crestview Wrestling and Football program will carry his memory high, and we are thankful to be able to call him coach and friend.”
It went on to say that grief counselors will be at the high school today until noon for anyone impacted by the death. Superintendent Randy Dunlap was contacted for comment, but wasn’t immediately available at the time of publication today.
The crash was reported at 6:07 p.m. Monday. Campbell had been driving northbound on Ohio 545 when he attempted to pass another vehicle on a double yellow-marked section of the road, colliding head-on with a third vehicle, the Ashland Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said in a press release.
Campbell’s vehicle then collided with the vehicle it had tried to pass. Both vehicles went off the right side of the road with Campbell’s vehicle overturning.
The other vehicle involved in the head-on collision also overturned and went off the left side of the road.
Campbell, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other driver in the head-on collision was transported OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital and later flown to Grant Medical Center in Columbus, where he was in serious condition Monday night. He was not identified in the state patrol press release. A passenger in that vehicle, also not yet identified, was taken to Ashland Community Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver and both passengers of the vehicle Campbell tried to pass also sustained non-life threatening injuries in the crash, troopers said. They were not identified by the patrol.
Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, according to troopers, who said the crash remains under investigation.
