MANSFIELD — A Mansfield police officer who fatally shot a sword-wielding man on Nov. 27 will be reinstated to full duty Wednesday, according to police Chief Keith Porch.

Officer Nolan Goodman, a four-year veteran of the force, had been placed on administrative leave after the shooting at an apartment building at 275 Poplar St.

Porch said police have conducted an initial administrative review of the officer-involved shooting.

“The primary investigation being conducted by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (Ohio BCI) is still pending,” Porch said in a press release.

“Once Ohio BCI’s independent investigation is completed, it will be presented to the Richland County Prosecutor’s Office for review.”

Police had responded at 5:46 a.m. to 275 Poplar St. when residents called to complain about a man causing a loud disturbance outside their apartment window, breaking the window.

The residents also advised the man was still outside the apartment and they continued to hear glass break.

Officers tried to make contact with the man, who was in an adjacent apartment. He was later identified by police as Micduff Lamarco Robinson, 40.

“The subject opened the door and directly came at an officer with a sword,” police stated. “This immediately escalated the confrontation and resulted in the subject being fatally shot.”

Prosecutor Gary Bishop could review the case and decide not to file any charges against the officer or he could present the case to a county grand jury for its decision.
