MANSFIELD — Only two Richland County football teams, Mansfield Senior and Lucas, are still strapping on their helmets as the high school season has reached the Elite Eight of the state playoffs.
Few things galvanize a community quite like high school sports, and Richland Source would like to help the region show its support for those youngsters, as each tries to make history with a win to reach the state semifinals. The Tygers and Cubs have each received ample support from the community during its recent run. But both teams could always use more, especially considering what’s on the line this week.
If you would like to leave a message of support for the Mansfield Senior and/or Lucas players and staff as they prepare for this week’s regional title game, click here. We will publish your messages of support on Friday, leading up to the big games.

How did they get here and what’s next:
Mansfield Senior beat Parma Heights Holy Name 45-30 in the Division III, Region 10 semifinals on Friday at Wooster. Lucas advanced by dumping Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas 35-21 in the Division VII, Region 25 semifinals at Canal Fulton Northwest High School.
Next up for the second-seeded Tygers (11-1) is No. 5 Sandusky (9-3) at 7 p.m. Friday at Clyde High School. The teams met in Week 5 of the regular season at Arlin Field with Senior High holding on for a 21-14 win.
Mansfield Senior is in the regional championship game for the first time in school history. The Tygers reached the second round of the playoffs in 2000 and 2013, but lost in the regional semifinals both years.
For Lucas, coach Scott Spitler’s squad is hoping the third time is the charm.
The second-seeded Cubs (10-2) will take on No. 1 Cuyahoga Heights (10-1) at 7 p.m. Saturday back at Canal Fulton Northwest High School.
The Cubs reached the regional championship game in 2015 and again last year. Lucas dropped a 21-14 heart-breaker to Glouster Trimble last November. The Tomcats scored the game-winning touchdown in the final minute on the way to a state runner-up finish.
