MADISON TOWNSHIP — About a month after Katelyn Smith was diagnosed with cancer, her school and community are coming together to rally support.
“I’m overwhelmed, in a good way, by all of the love and support I’m getting from the community,” said Smith. “People have been so kind and generous. I’m so thankful, especially to my family, my friends, the staff at OhioHealth and all of my co-workers at Madison South.”
Smith is a first-grade teacher at Madison South Elementary who was recently diagnosed with an aggressive form of Stage 4 Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. She is also a Madison graduate, Class of 2011.
A fundraiser for Smith takes place on Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. at Forest Hills Golf Course. The spaghetti dinner will be served for $10 per person. There will also be door prizes, a 50/50 raffle, a silent auction and a bake sale.
Amanda Siwek, who organized the event, described Smith as “very kind-hearted, always willing to lend a helping hand, very cheerful and optimistic.”
The money raised at the event will go directly to Smith to help pay medical expenses. She is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment.
“Every three weeks she has to be in the hospital for four days for her chemo and I know that can get pretty expensive,” Siwek said. “I think it’ll be good for her to be able to focus on getting better instead of worrying about how it’s all going to be paid for.”
Siwek is accepting donations for the raffle and silent auction through Nov. 1. Checks can be made out to Katelyn Smith.
