COLUMBUS — Mandy Ruminski played herself into contention.

Lexington’s junior standout shot even par 70 during Friday’s opening round of the Division I state tournament at Ohio State’s Gray Course. Ruminski is in a three-way tie for second, just one stroke behind tournament leader Madison Spiess of New Albany heading into Saturday’s final round.

Starting on No. 10, Ruminski played the back in 1-over 36 and was at plus-3 through 13 holes. She had three birdies on her final five holes and made a nifty par save on No. 9 to get back to even.

“She really rallied at the end,” Lady Lex coach Mike Kathrein said. “She had birdies at (Nos.) 5, 7 and 8 and had a great par on her last hole.

“We’re not going to do anything differently (Saturday). I’ll tell her to stay steady.”

The Ashland girls were in seventh place after shooting a 322. Kira Moore led the way with a 75, good for 14th individually. Anna Watson carded a 76 and was in a seven-way tie for 15th, while Klaira Paramore shot a 78 and was tied for 24th. Sarah Anderson shot a 93 and Abby Fossaceca had a 96.

“We are pleased with where we are in the field, the girls got off to a shaky start but rallied really well,” Ashland coach Nancy Noble said. “We have a chance to grind it out and make a move up in the field. Hopefully Saturday will be moving day! I was really pleased with the three rounds in the 70’s, and the two in the 90’s were nice too.

“They can improve on all of their scores, if we play smart and eliminate some mistakes.”

Ashland tees off on Saturday from the No. 10 tee starting at 10:50 a.m.

New Albany leads the teams standings after shooting a 289 Friday. Lakota East was second with a 305, followed by Upper Arlington (311). Mason and Centerville were tied for fourth at 314.
