FINLDAY — Trevor Dials thrives on pressure and there was no shortage of stressful moments during the Division I district tournament Thursday afternoon at Sycamore Springs.
Dials shot a 75 to earn one of the two individual state-qualifying berths up for grabs.
Ashland shot a team total of 322 to earn the second team berth available. Elida won the district crown with a 318.
“Some guys like to be able to see the scoreboard and some guys don’t want to know what’s going on around them and Trevor is one of those guys who likes to know what everyone else is shooting and what he needs to do,” Lexington coach Greg Smith said. “He kept asking how everyone else was doing and I finally told him with three holes to go that if he parred the last three holes he would qualify for state.”
The situation never unnerved Dials.
“I enjoy the pressure,” said the junior, who had eight pars and one bogey on the back nine. “On the last three holes I had all pars.
“I hit a lot of fairways and greens. That makes it a lot easier.”
Lexington finished eighth in the team standings with a 346. Cayden Durchik shot an 88, while Tyler Jackson had a 91 and Michael Massa had a 92. Trevin Smith had a 97.
The Arrows were led by sophomore Tyler Sabo, who fired a 74 to share medalist honors with Elida’s Carson Harmon. Kamden Mowry was next with a 79, followed by Aiden Baker (84), Ryan Frazee (85) and Aidan Chandler (95).
Madison finished 10th in the team standings with a 361. Jaekob Conard led the way for the Rams with an 81. William Laskey carded an 89, while Landon Ellis had a 95. Ian Wolfe had a 96 and Jonah Aumend had a 98.
