James Williams and his wife perform at Newsroom After Hours on July 12.

MANSFIELD — Gospel music has been ingrained in James Williams forever.

He grew up hearing gospel at his grandfather’s church, where his father played the organ. His mother directed the choir.

“It was the first music I knew of,” he said. “The first music I heard; it was the first music I was introduced to. It is definitely a foundation of who I am.”

Williams will be one of four musical guests at Maddox Memorial Church of God In Christ, located at 1148 Walker Lake Road on Sept. 27.

The event, which aims to bring attention to local gospel singers, is free to the public. There will be a donation box for the church.

For Williams, his music is a way to connect with God, he said. It’s a chance for him to celebrate unwavering love.

“Gospel music is good news music,” he said. “It’s a way to spread the message of God’s love. It’s always positive.”

In 2018, Williams was awarded four Kingdom Image Awards for his debut album, Praiseology: The Freshman Years. He won Male Artist of the Year, Artist of the Year, Song of the Year and Album of the Year.

The awards gave Williams confidence, encouraging him to continue making original music.

“It gave me confidence because it let me know people wanted it,” he said. “That what I have to give is not goofy or whack.”

The show will be held at the first church Williams attended when he and his family moved from New Jersey to Mansfield in 1989.

“It’s exciting,” he said. “I’m excited to be with the community and to be a beacon to help show that we have very talented people here.”

Other performers include Kristin Scott, of Mansfield, Brianna Collins, of Akron, and Trybe Called Judah, of Mansfield.
