ONTARIO — Many of the names have changed, but Galion just keeps winning.
Matthew McMullen shot a 1 over 73 and Spencer Keller carded a 78 as the Tigers captured the City Tournament title Friday at Oak Tree Golf Club.
Galion shot a team total of 317, 22 shots clear of runner-up Madison (339). Shelby (355) was third, followed by Clear Fork (358), Ontario (366), Lexington (374), Bucyrus (375), Wynford (392), Crestview (393), Mohawk (395) and St. Peter’s (431).
“Considering we’re a young team, I’m pleased with the way we are playing considering we are such a young team,” Galion coach Bryce Lehman said. “We have no seniors, two juniors, two sophomores and two freshmen.”
The Tigers qualified for the Division II state tournament each of the past two years, but lost a wealth of talent to graduation. Both McMullen and Keller played on the state-qualifying teams the last two years, giving Galion a potent one-two combo.
“We have three of them (McMullen, Keller and Max Longwell) with quite a bit of varsity experience and the other three are catching on.”
Longwell shot an 85 Friday, while freshman Nick McMullen carded an 81.
“I like the direction we’re heading,” Lehman said. “We’re 9-0 in the league standings and sectional and district are coming up.”
Shelby’s Lincoln Finnegan was the individual medalist, shooting an even par 72. The junior’s round included three birdies and three bogeys.
“I was just trying to put it in the fairway and make par,” Finnegan said. “I was trying to eliminate stupid mistakes.”
Finnegan qualified for the district tournament as a sophomore.
“I want to get back to the district tournament again this year,” Finnegan said, “and hopefully get to state.”
