MANSFIELD — The Richland County Sheriff’s Office is teaming up with a national law enforcement seat belt campaign — the Click it or Ticket Border to Border program.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 10,076 unbuckled passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in the United State in 2017.

That same year, 55 percent of passenger vehicle occupants killed at night, (6 p.m. to 5:59 a.m.) were not wearing seat belts.

The NHTSA is asking all state to participate in the “Border to Border” event, a one-day national seat belt awareness event on May 20.

“The Boarder to Boarder component of the Click it or Ticket campaign is so important because it raises awareness about seat belt safety during the time period when seat belt safety when seat belt are least used,” Sherrif J. Steve Sheldon.

“With an increased number of cars flooding the streets due to the Memorial Day holiday, it’s imperative we get the work out about the importance of seat belt safety.

“If the enforcement crackdown wakes people up to the danger of unrestrained driving, we’ll consider our mission to be a success,” the sheriff said.
