MANSFIELD — The Richland Area Chamber of Commerce and OhioMeansJobs have teamed up to feature more than 90 local employers at their third annual job fair for Thursday, May 2 in the Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center, 890 West 4th St. in Mansfield.
The job fair will be open to the public from noon to 5 p.m., plus feature a first-time, hour-long session for graduating high school seniors directly prior to the public portion of the event.
“Last year, this event was very well attended, and this year looks to be just as big” Clint Knight – director of workforce development at the Richland Area Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development in a press release. “Every attending business is hiring, and we aim to help job seekers make the right connection.”
He was especially excited about the new portion for students. Richland County has approximately 1,350 graduating high school seniors, but the pathway for those considering a career directly out of high school hasn’t always been clear, he explained.
The job fair, however, can connect those students with potential employers, ideally allowing them to walk away with a clear direction toward the next step or a job offer.
“It’s more like a speed interview process for them. Because each of them will have resumes that they can hand to the employers, and the career coaches have met with each student to identify at least three employers that they want to investigate,” said Mark DeLaney Jr., of SPARC Talent Development of Richland County.
He hopes to organize signing days in May to celebrate the students who find jobs. Schools participating in the early portion of the job fair include Lexington, Plymouth, Crestview, Clear Fork, Mansfield, Shelby and Pioneer.
Teresa Alt of OhioMeansJobs says the organization held a youth job fair last year, but was excited when an opportunity came to partner with the Chamber.
“It was just something the community told us they wanted a year and a half ago, so this year when it was brought up and Clint was willing to put it up front and center, and really made it a priority on the agenda for planning, it worked out much better,” Alt said.
Those in attendance for any part of the job fair should come prepared and dressed for interviews. They should also bring a current resume.
There are no costs associated with this event for employers or job seekers. To pre-register to take part in job seeker preparation classes to gain VIP status at the Job Fair contact: OhioMeansJobs Richland County at 419-774-5300.
