MANSFIELD – The St. Peter’s Catholic Church annual Easter bake sale kicked off at 7 a.m. Tuesday with a line of people waiting to spill into the church hall at 60 S. Mulberry St.
The bake sale — one of the largest in Ohio — features hundreds of candies, breads, pastries and other holiday foods, including 3,000 cabbage rolls, several hundred colored eggs and countless pounds of egg and potato salad.
Event organizer Ann Brown said most food preparation began in mid-March and continued through Monday evening.
“One week, it was potica (a Slovak nut-filled pastry) making, another week it was cabbage rolls, another week it was candy,” Brown said.
The pierogies and cabbage rolls sold out almost immediately. Brown believes the selection will likely be picked over by Wednesday. She advised people to come by Tuesday afternoon for more options.
The bake sale runs from until 5 p.m. Tuesday and from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday. Lunch is served on both days starting at 11 a.m. and includes cabbage rolls, sloppy joes, shredded chicken sandwiches and vegetable and broccoli soups.
The funds raised from the Easter bake sale are used for the purchase of wine, hosts and other sacramental items used by the church throughout the year.
Brown said it’s the efforts of more than 100 volunteers who make the bake sale possible.
“The volunteers are absolutely amazing in terms of generosity of their time and hard work. Without them, we couldn’t do this,” she said.
