MANSFIELD — Mansfield’s Carol and Rick Taylor intend to open Cypress Hill Winery and a new deli on Wednesday, April 17 at the corner of 4th and Diamond Streets in downtown Mansfield.

Their two-story restaurant, called Hudson and Essex, will house the soon-to-open winery and deli, plus a spacious dining room, which will likely open later in May.

“We want to get this up and running with the winery and deli, and then we’ll figure out the dining,” Rick Taylor said.

Both Rick and his wife are happy to see the 14,400 square-foot space near completion after months of work.

“Everything went into this,” Carol said, when asked about what the couple has done since moving into the space.

The building most recently operated as National Electric Supply. Initially it was a car dealership, which sold Hudson and Essex cars. This factoid inspired the restaurant’s name and will be recognized with pictures and hand-carved griffins — replicas of the Hudson’s hood ornaments — on either side of the upstairs bar.

Another bar will be located inside the eat-in winery, where guests can order appetizers or recline by a fireplace.

Giant barn doors, made from wood found elsewhere in the building, close off a portion of the winery for the Taylors to bottle their wines.

The deli’s menu will feature a variety of soups, salads and sandwiches for both dine-in and take-out. People will also be able to purchase meats, cheeses and freshly baked breads.

“We want to change the menu every three or four months with the seasons because we want to buy things fresh and locally as much as we can,” Carol said.

Hudson and Essex will be open Wednesday through Monday. Hours haven’t yet been determined. It will be closed Tuesdays.
