MANSFIELD — Love is a dangerous thing.

In Murder at the Howard Johnson’s, a play running at the Mansfield Playhouse, Jan 18, 19 and 25, 26, and 27, a love triangle turns into three murder plots.

The three actors: Lindsay Shoup, Ryan Kiley, and Beau Roberts, play characters who concoct ways to kill off each character.

“They team up to kill each other off,” said Candy Boyd, director of the comedy. “But the ways they do it are hilariously bad and they all take place in the hotel, the Howard Johnson’s.”

The play takes place in three scenes. Paul the husband (Roberts) and Arlene the wife (Shoup) plan to kill Mitch the boyfriend (Kiley) in the first scene. Six months later, the husband’s murder is plotted. In the third scene, the two men plot to murder the wife.

“The thing I love about this show is that it’s a mix between a soap opera and Three’s Company,” Boyd said.

Roberts said the script is funny, but the actors were able to put more laughs on stage than are in the script.

“It’s about a love triangle with people who are very terrible at killing each other. There are a lot of jokes in there. I hope people come out for it. It’s funny stuff.”
