MANSFIELD — One of the city’s landmarks is getting a fresh coat of paint.

Centerra Co-op is repainting its silos along North Main Street. City council recently approved appropriating $22,000 to be used for repainting the “Welcome to Mansfield” sign on the silos.

“They’re investing somewhere around $800,000 in getting those silos refurbished,” said city economic development director Tim Bowersock. “It’s a small amount for us to pay, I think, to have our sign on the side of them.”

Bowersock estimated that the sign hasn’t been repainted for about 15 years.

In the summer of 2000, Terry Philpott was commissioned by former mayor Lydia Reid to paint the sign as a way to help beautify the area.

“It doesn’t maybe seem to be very important to a lot of people, but honestly it’s a very good landmark for Mansfield,” Bowersock said. “A lot of people know when they see that, that’s the way into downtown on Main Street.”

He added that many companies use it as a wayfinding monument.

The sign will keep the same graphic.
