ONTARIO – A local choir intends to honor service men and women through its annual spring concert.

Homeschool Harmony will perform a series of patriotic songs for its “We Salute You” concert at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 22 in the Ontario Free Methodist Church, 2200 Bedford Blvd.

“We want to honor our veterans,” said choir director, Kristy Hergatt. “It’s important for our kids to know there are people who fought so that they could be free.”

The concert will feature patriotic favorites like “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag.”

“We will end with honoring all past and present service men and women,” Hergatt said.

She explained that letters were sent to local organizations that serve veterans, but everyone is encouraged to attend. The event is free and open to the public.

Some Disney music will also be incorporated in the show.

The Homeschool Harmony includes about 50 home-school students from Mansfield and the surrounding area. Students come from Richland, Ashland, Crawford and Morrow Counties to participate.

The choir held its first concert in December with 32 students and has grown since then. The group is now split into two “squads,” the junior group includes members age 4 to 8 and the seniors include everyone age 9 and up.

“This is our first year for Homeschool Harmony, and we hope to continue it in the future, so this would be our annual spring concert,” Hergatt said.

She hopes to have at least two concerts per year, one in the spring and one for Christmas.

The choir takes a break over summer, but it will begin meeting again in September.
