MANSFIELD — The Mansfield Police Department is awaiting a coroner’s report following the death of an 18-month-old on May 3.

The child suffered apparent head injuries and was taken to OhioHealth Mansfield, police said. Later, he was life-flighted to Nationwide Hospital in Columbus, where he died.

“We have an investigation into the injuries that occurred,” Lt. Robert Skropits said. “We won’t know what the injuries are until we hear back from the Franklin County Coroner’s office.

“Once they get it done, we will look at the report.”

WBNS10-TV in Columbus identified the child as Zamien Elliot Scott. The toddler’s obituary was published on Monday at Richland Source.

The Mansfield Police Department declined to comment on the child’s identity, but did confirm it was contacted by health providers Monday night. That began the investigation.

“We won’t know if it was an accident or foul play until we see the coroner’s report,” Skropits said. “They will be able to see stuff doctors and we can’t see — the stuff on the inside. All we know is what we saw on the outside (of the body).”
