GALION – The Galion Primary School will host a Family Literacy Event for families in the Galion City School District with children ages 5 years old and younger Friday, May 4.

The event, “Focus on Early Language Awareness,” will begin at 9 a.m. in the Primary School. The goal of the event is to help families learn ways to help prepare their children for literacy development.

“Part of the morning is focused solely on instruction for the families, while the children are engaging in activities with our staff,” said Primary School Student Support Specialist Katy Erlsten. “The second half of the morning will give families the opportunity to work with their children on various literacy development activities learned in the first session.”

Research has proven that a child’s ability to read and comprehend materials they read have a direct correlation to success in academics and in their adult life.

“Our Primary Staff, from preschool to second grade, is doing an outstanding job working with students to help them develop their literacy skills,” Galion Superintendent Jim Grubbs said. “Our continued focus on literacy development from birth to five years old will ultimately help our students achieve greater academic success, leading to greater success in life.”

Those families interested in attending the Family Literacy Event May 4 should call the Primary School office at 419-468-4010 to reserve their seats for the event. Anyone seeking additional information can contact Katy Erlsten at erlsten.katy@galionschools.org.
