Vivian L. Gages, 90, of Mansfield, passed away early Saturday morning, Jan. 20, 2018, at Liberty Nursing Center in Mansfield. Born Dec. 11, 1927 in Berkeley, California, she is the daughter of the late John Glade and Jeanette (Cook) Mentzer.
Vivian was a 1948 graduate of the Mansfield Hospital School of Nursing where she served as Class President. Possessing a servant’s heart she was very generous with both her time and talent. She had an unbreakable faith in God and her church, Ontario United Methodist. Vivian taught Sunday school for over 60 years and, among many other volunteer activities, served on the decorating committee . When you think of a Good Samaritan, you think of Vivian. She leaves a legacy of generosity, kindness, love and forgiveness that all who knew her will treasure forever.
Vivian was most proud to be a wife, mother, and grandmother-all roles in which she excelled. She showered her family with affection and kept an immaculate house. She will be remembered for hanging her clothes on the clothesline to dry while she tended to many other household duties. She enjoyed crafts and gardening, but her most favorite activity was spending time with her family.
She is survived by a daughter, Vickie (Greg) Dalton of Mansfield; son, Trent (Cindy) Gages of Valley City, OH; one grandson, Rhett Dalton of Columbus, OH; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Mentzer of Ontario, OH and Maria Mentzer of Westerville, OH; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Paul Gages; son, Grant Gages; and brothers, Clay and John Mentzer.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2018, at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Rd. The funeral service will be held Thursday at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home with Rev. Dennis Rinehart officiating. She will be laid to rest beside her husband in Mansfield Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Ontario United Methodist Church to honor the unwavering faithfulness of Vivian.
