CRESTLINE — A group of Crestline 4th- and 5th-grade students have spearheaded a drive to create care packages for deployed troops. So far, students have sent five boxes abroad, according to Crestline teacher Cory Forshaw.

Some items included are: soap, wet wipes, lotion, deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrushes, Slim Jims, candy canes, jerky, sunflower seeds, water enhancers, holiday cards etc.

“The most notable contribution was from the Shelby Legion Riders Club of $500,” Forshaw said.

Several teachers and families of Crestline students contributed to the project. While led by students in grades 4-5, students in grades 3-5 all contributed to the cause.

“Our first round of Care Packages have shipped,” Forshaw said. “Our second round will ship when we return from Christmas break and we have spent the $500 donation on similar items aforementioned.”

The group of students are fourth- and fifth-graders who were elected President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer of their respective class during our mock election back in November. All are members of my social studies classes.

“The entire process has been incredible. Not only have the students learned about how we can help our troops, but the importance of our military branches,” Forshaw said. “This project is something we intend to continue in the future on an annual basis, especially given the knowledge we have gained in recent weeks.”
