James S. “Jim” Tharp, 91, passed away Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018 at Country Meadows Care Center in Bellville. Born October 2, 1926 in Paradise Hill, he was the son of Charles O. and Nina (Scott) Tharp.

He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Korean War and retired from National Latex in Ashland following 35 years of service as a National Sales Manager. He enjoyed watching Westerns, traveling in his RV with his wife before her death, remodeling houses with his family, riding his golf cart around the campgrounds and watching SpongeBob with Madison and Marissa.

Jim always had a smile on his face and always made it a point to thank everyone. He was the rock of the family who made sure that supper was always at 5:00 o’clock. He also enjoyed the company of his dogs over the years and his grandchildren and great grandchildren who affectionately called him Papa.

He is survived by two daughters, Joy Nixon, of Akron, and Amy (George) Smith, of Loudonville; a son, Matthew (Beth Radefeld) Tharp, of Medina; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and his rescue dog, Harley.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Patricia Tharp in 2002; two brothers and four sisters.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 11, 2018 in Chestnut Grove Cemetery with a Celebration of Life to follow at Smith Pleasant Valley Campgrounds. Dinner will be served promptly at 5 p.m. in memory of Jim.
