ASHLAND — Now that she owns Ashland’s career record for 3-point field goals, Kylie Radebaugh has another milestone in her crosshairs.
Next up for the senior sharpshooter is the 1,000-point club.
Radebaugh, the Richland Bank Athlete of the Week, scored 17 points in last week’s 70-40 win over Madison. That total included her school record 88th 3-pointer with 5:08 remaining in the third quarter. She broke the record of former teammate and 2015 Ashland graduate Kylie Chandler, who was in attendance and took part in a brief on-court ceremony.
“It was even better that (the record) belonged to one of my best friends,” Radebaugh said afterward. “She was a senior when I was a freshman and she told me if anyone was going to break it, she was glad it was me.
“I wasn’t super focused on breaking the record. I knew it was coming, but I wasn’t forcing anything.”
Radebaugh added 14 points in a 61-55 loss to Shelby in the Richland Source Challenge on Saturday as the Arrows dipped to 4-4. With 14 regular season games and at least one postseason game remaining, Radebaugh should top the 1000-point plateau before season’s end.
“One thousand points is next, but it will probably be near the end of the season. I’m not sure of the exact number, but she is in the mid-800s now,” Ashland coach Jason Snow said. “She’s a great kid and she’s had a great career for us.”
Shelby coach Natalie Lantz agreed. Ashland trailed the Whippets 29-16 late in the first half only to come back and take the lead briefly in the second half Saturday night.
“They have got a couple of talented guards who have been around a while,” Lantz said. “Ashland is a really good team.”
The Arrows should be in the hunt for what is shaping up to be an entertaining Ohio Cardinal Conference championship chase this winter. Ashland is 1-1 in OCC play and should duke it out with Wooster (4-0), Lexington (2-0) and Mount Vernon (2-1).
“We still have some things to work on, but we are improving,” Radebaugh said. “We feel like we can challenge for the (OCC) championship.”
