OLIVESBURG — The Crestview football team ran through a banner Friday night that stated: “Pucker up Flyers, kiss your winning streak goodbye.”

But it was the Cougars who got smacked. St. Paul administered a 38-7 paddling in a Firelands Conference clash that brought coach Dan Mager’s team back to earth after a three-game winning streak of its own.

“We’ve been building our numbers up, and that’s a part of it,” Magers said. “But when it comes to (beating) elite teams, we’re not close. It’s humbling.”

The Cougars (3-3 overall, 2-1 in the Firelands Conference) were coming off consecutive 40-point outings against Sandusky Central Catholic, Western Reserve and Mapleton. But the Flyers were a different animal.

St. Paul (6-0, 3-0) extended its winning streak to 22 regular-season games with a stout defense and a methodical offense that controlled the ball, the clock and the score all night.

“Our kids learned the gameplan and did a great job with it,” Flyers coach John Livengood said. “Our defense did a great job of containing their speed.”

St. Paul scored touchdowns on its first three possessions and only Sage Baith’s interception at the Crestview 2-yard line thwarted a fourth TD in the first half. Still, Joey Catalano’s field goal with 53 seconds remaining in the second quarter gave Livengood’s squad a 24-0 halftime lead.

Quarterback Nick Lukasko fired his second scoring pass of the night, a 17-yard strike to Kaden Rossman, early in the third quarter for a 31-0 bulge that began the running clock. Cam Caizzo’s 3-yard touchdown run later in the period guaranteed it would stay that way for the remainder of the contest.

The Cougars struggled to move the ball all night. Quarterback Jay Oswalt hit 6 of 11 passes for 57 yards and ran 13 times for 18 yards. Oswalt’s 12-yard TD pass to Garrett Dudley with 1:25 to play helped Crestview avoid the shutout.

“Their (defense is) so fast, so quick, as a playcaller it inhibits you horribly,” Mager said.

Offensively, Lukaska piloted the Flyers to a smooth showing. He connected on 8 of 11 passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns. Halfback Thane Crabbs chewed up 155 yards on 19 carries and registered two more scores.

“They ran the ball well (on us) and our defense is pretty darn good,” Mager said. “I’m proud of our kids, they kept fighting. We’re not going to quit.”
