SHELBY — The solar eclipse that’s slated to take place today will last for mere minutes.

“But this ceremony, which will, of course, kick off the commencement of this grand project, will bring benefits to the City of Shelby for decades to come,” said Shelby Mayor Steve Schag during a Monday morning groundbreaking ceremony for a new Valero 24 Store.

This will be businessman Raj Chandat’s fourth Valero gas station in Richland County.

“Mr. Raj Chandat of Rama Tika Management has chosen to make a major business investment here in the City of Shelby, and for that Mr. Chandat I thank you,” Schag said.

Chandat thanked the city for its support, saying he feels thrilled and welcomed in the Shelby community.

He’s choosing to set up shop at the corner of North Gamble and State streets to accommodate the Industrial Park and local residents.

The store will feature a full kitchen and offer an extensive selection of items, Chandat said.

He hopes to have the it open by Dec. 15.

Kevin Lamb of Lamb Builders is constructing the 5,000-square foot building.

Schag noted that both Lamb and Chandat are Richland County residents, adding that they have a proven track record of producing finished products that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

“They have both expressed sincerely from their hearts that they want to be good neighbors now, during the construction, and in the years to come with the final product of a Valero 24 convenience store,” Schag said.

The new development is said to be a $1.7 million project, expected to bring 15 to 20 full-and part-time jobs. Chandat said he’ll start hiring about 15 to 20 days before opening day.

“It is my hope the presence of this Valero 24 Store will prompt further economic development in the northern sector of our city and Richland County,” Schag said.
