Police arrest in handcuffs

MANSFIELD — A 15-year-old white male was taken into custody and charged with felonious assault Wednesday after a BB gun shooting on Vennum Ave. hospitalized a man, according to Mansfield Police.

On Monday, Mansfield Police were called to the 100 block of Vennum Ave. in reference to a person being shot at approximately 9:45 p.m. Officers discovered a 49-year-old man was suffering from a chest wound. The man said he was shot as he turned to walk away from people he believed were arguing over a potential drug deal.

The man was transported to Ohio Health Mansfield for treatment of his wound. Witnesses at the scene reported hearing a “pop” that sounded as if the bullet had come from a BB gun.

On Wednesday, detectives along with Mansfield Patrol officers located a juvenile suspect identified as the person responsible for the injuries. After interviewing the suspect, the teen was taken into custody and charged with felonious assault.

Authorities say he was also served a previously issued and unrelated juvenile warrant. A BB gun believed to be the weapon used in the assault was later located by detectives following up on the case.

The investigation is still ongoing and the motive leading up to the incident remains unclear. Detective Rich Miller of the Major Crimes Section is asking anyone with information should call him at 419-755-9758.
