Gerldean Brooks

Gerldean Brooks, 81, of Shelby, died Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at the Crestwood Care Center in Shelby.

Gerldean was born July 4, 1935 in Salyersville, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Oren and Tessie (Conley) Tackett. She was a 1955 graduate of Salyersville High School.

Gerldean was the head teacher and center coordinator at the Community Action Head Start in Shelby for 24 years.

She loved her family and especially enjoyed spending time with her granddaughter, Bailey. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Plymouth and attended Taylortown Community Church where she was an active salesperson for their annual pumpkin roll fundraiser.

Gerldean enjoyed playing bingo, doing crossword puzzles, and selling Avon. 

Gerldean is survived by her son: S. David (Beth) Brooks, of Mansfield; three grandchildren: Bailey E. (Kyle Bryant) Brooks, Sara (Justin) Welter, Daniel (Leah Hardin) Pennell; three great grandchildren: Connor, Ava, Finnley; 10 brothers and sisters: Earnestene Cunningham, of Plymouth, Eloise Landis, of Shelby, Virginia (Jan) Day, of Shelby; Janet Sue (Paul) Ryman, of Shelby; John (Barb) Tackett, of Colorado, Rev. O. Douglas (Mary) Tackett, of Shelby, Reta Hammond, of Ontario, Jerry (Sharon) Tackett, of South Carolina; Barbara Porter, of Shelby, Sandra (Paul) Kistemaker, of Norwalk; three uncles and an aunt; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two infant brothers and her first husband, David A. Brooks, in 1971. 

Family and friends are welcome on Friday, June 16, 2017 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 W. Main St., Shelby, where funeral services will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. Her brother, Rev. O. Douglas Tackett, Pastor of Taylortown Community Church, and Rev. Linda Kaufman, Pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Plymouth, will co-officiate with burial following in Greenlawn Cemetery in Plymouth.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Turner Funeral Home to assit the family with final expenses.
