MANSFIELD — A suspect in shooting Saturday morning has been arrested while walking downtown near the Mansfield Police station, authorities said.
Gino Brooks, 36 was booked on a possession of weapons charge under disability pending further investigation.
“This one appears to be domestic — not street violence,” Mansfield Police Chief Ken Coontz said.
The victim, Vern Fears, 48, was shot in his right side at 6:20 a.m. at his home 469 Wayne St., police reported. His wound is not life threatening.
In his incident report, Fears would not tell police who shot him or what happened.
Fears’ estranged wife, Monette Hilroy, told police Fears kicked in the rear kitchen door and got into an argument with Brooks, her current boyfriend. Hilroy said she was upstairs and did not see what happened.
Brooks reportedly fled the scene on foot with a handgun near the police station, Coontz said. He was still in possession of the firearm when he was arrested without incident.
The investigation will be turned over to the Richland County Prosecutor’s Office.
