BUCYRUS — Rarely does a plane crash have a happy ending. But it appears David Cress is living that exception.

Cress, of Lexington, is back home after walking away from a plane crash that took place Friday night in Crawford County, according to the Bucyrus Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The 59-year-old was transported to Avita Health System Bucyrus Hospital on Friday at approximately 7:44 p.m. after emergency personnel treated him at the scene just outside Bucyrus.

Trooper Barry Miller, of the Bucyrus Post, said Cress was piloting an ultralight plane when he took off from Port Bucyrus Crawford County Airport.

“From what (Cress) remembers, he was having a structural issue and so he tried to land it,” Miller said. “He turned to head back to the airport. It took a nosedive and he couldn’t recover from it.”

Miller said Cress crashed into a wooded area when emergency personnel arrived on the scene. After being taken to Avita in Bucyrus he was transported to Grand Medical Center in Columbus, mostly as a precautionary measure due to head injuries.

“I’ve talked to him a couple of times,” Miller said. “He’s home and he’s doing real well.”
