John Tope Jr.

John Tope Jr., 93, of Loudonville died early Monday morning, May 15, 2017 in UH Samaritan Medical Center, Ashland following an extended illness.

John was born Aug. 4, 1923 in Lakeville and was the son of the late John R. and Ruth (Raby) Tope.

He lived in Loudonville most of his life and was a 1942 graduate of Lakeville High School. Following graduation, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps serving during World War II. Upon his return, he worked for the Flxible Company, spent 20 years with the Standard Oil station in downtown Loudonville and ultimately retired in 1988 following 20 years of service with the Wooster Brush Co. working as a shipping department foreman.

John was a member of First Baptist Church, Loudonville, serving as a Deacon and the American Legion Post #257. John served Meals on Wheels to his community for more than 20 years and enjoyed walking, traveling, and his daily McDonald’s 1 p.m. Coffee group.

He is survived by his wife, Eileen (Eagle) Tope, whom he married July 27, 1943; his son: Rick (Joy) Tope, of Las Vegas, Nevada; one grandson Larry Sweeny, of Birmingham, Alabama; five great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; a half-brother: Edward Everstine, of Fombell, Pennsylvania; and a sister: Clare Clemens, of Bellville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son: Larry Tope in 1966; three brothers: William and Paul Tope, and Donald Glenn Webb; and three sisters: Carrie Klock, Mary Moyer, and Lucille Taylor.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 19 at 10:30 a.m. in Lindsey Funeral Home, Loudonville with Rev. Frank Taylor officiating. Burial with military honors by the American Legion and VFW will follow in Loudonville Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday, from 5 to 7 p.m in the Lindsey Funeral Home.
