Jack Obenour, 83, of Ontario, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017 at home. Born September 18, 1933 in Marion, Ohio, he was the son of Leon E. and Susan (Gardner) Obenour. An exemplary man, he dedicated his life to his family first, his community and the country he loved.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving at the end of the Korean War. He retired from General Motors following 30 plus years of service. Jack was a member of the UAW, serving as Recording Secretary of Local #549. He served as Chairman of the local CAP Committee and the Central Ohio CAP Committee.
Jack was Chairman of the Apprentice Committee at General Motors for many years and was instrumental in establishing the Apprentice Program between General Motors and NCTC. He also served on the Board of Trustees at NCTC.
He was a member of the local Democratic Party where he served as Vice Chairman and Treasurer. Jack was also a member of Venus Lodge #152 F&AM, Valley of Canton Scottish Rite and Naomi Shrine #10 White Shrine of Jerusalem.
He is survived by his wife, Maxine (Leadingham) Obenour whom he married June of 1956; children, Steven (Debbie) Obenour, Sharon Griffith and Mary Beth Herbert; 10 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Vera Micheli and Faye Lee.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Lee Ann Obenour Holt and his siblings, Pam Fangman, Norman Gardner, Marion (Pete) Obenour, Mary Alice Johnston, Richard Obenour and Carol Griffis.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2017 at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 South Lexington-Springmill Road, Ontario conducted by Pastor Kevin Evans. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to the time of the service at the funeral home on Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
