ASHLAND – After a 9-2 season that wrapped up Saturday with a win over Ohio Dominican, the Ashland University Eagle football team learned Sunday night that they did not qualify for the Division II postseason.
Heading into Week 11, the Eagles were No. 9 in Super Region 4. The 34-21 win over ODU Saturday moved the Eagles up one spot in the final regular season rankings, leaving AU one spot shy of making the playoffs. The top seven teams in each region qualify for the 28-team Division II postseason. The top seed in each super region gets a first-round bye.
Two teams from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference qualified for the DII playoffs. Grand Valley State (10-0) finished No. 1 in Super Region 4 and Ferris State (9-2) was ranked No. 2 in the final regular season rankings. Ferris State will play Midwestern State on Nov. 19. Grand Valley State gets a bye in the first round and awaits the winner of the game between Colorado Mesa and Texas A&M-Commerce.
AU beat Ferris State, 39-31, on the road on in Week 4 and did not play Grand Valley State.
The Eagles have made the Division II playoffs five times, including a trip in 2015 after a perfect regular season that ended with a first round loss to Grand Valley State.
