COLUMBUS — A victory in first-round prep football playoff action has led to a second-round assignment for a trio of north central Ohio schools.
Lexington tripped No. 3 seed Clyde on Saturday night when the sixth-seeded Minutemen scored, went for two, and converted on quarterback Logan Pfizenmayer’s two-point run in overtime to earn a superb 29-28 road victory.
As a result, the Ohio Cardinal Conference co-champions improved to 8-3 and will challenge second-seeded Sandusky (10-1) on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Bellevue’s First National Bank Field. The Blue Streaks rolled over Ashland 42-7 in their playoff opener.
Top-seeded Toledo Central Catholic (11-0) meets No. 5-seed Hunting Valley University School (8-3) at Kalahari Field in Huron Memorial Stadium at the other Region 10 semifinal.
Shelby returns to action on Friday night.
The fourth-seeded Whippets climbed all over Bloom-Carroll in a 56-13 Division IV, Region 13 mismatch. Running back Devon “Shorty” Brooks scored seven touchdowns as the Whippets improved to 10-1.
Shelby’s reward is a Region 15 semifinal date with No. 8 seed Duncan Falls Philo (9-2) at Westerville North’s Warrior Field at McCann Stadium. The Electrics (9-2) destroyed previously unbeaten and top-seeded Heath 42-7, knocking the Bulldogs’ quarterback out at halftime, and racing to a running clock in the second half.
Second-seeded Steubenville (10-1) meets No. 3-seed Johnstown-Monroe (10-1) at Dover’s Crater Stadium in the region’s other semifinal.
Crawford County has one team remaining, too. Second-seeded Wynford (11-0) methodically dismissed Gibsonburg 22-6 in a Division II, Region 26 postseason opener. The Royals move on to challenge No. 3-seed Defiance Ayersville (11-0) Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Findlay’s Donnell Stadium.
Ayersville ripped Seneca East 49-0 in its quarterfinal.
Top-seeded Hamler Patrick Henry (11-0) meets No. 4-seed Liberty Center (9-2) at Napoleon Charles Buckenmeyer Stadium in the other semifinal.
