James L. Spence, 70, of Galion, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016 at Signature Healthcare, after a short illness.
Jim Spence was born in Lawrence County, Ohio on March 14, 1946 to the late Clifford and Nellie (Webb) Spence. He married Joan Blevins Harris on March 15, 2016 and she survives him. Jim and Joan had shared the last 9 years of their lives together.
Jim was employed by Marion Correctional Facility, Marion as a guard until retirement in 2002 with 25 years of service. Jim served in the U.S. Army, was a member of AMVETS Post #5293, Ironton, Ohio. He enjoyed watching boxing, playing cards and going to the casino. In his younger years he played golf and boxed.
He is survived by his wife Joan Spence, his grandchildren, Lance Hudson and Johnny Dale Hudson, both of Marion, his six great-grandchildren, his brother, Clifford “Sonny” and Linda Spence, of Kokomo, Indiana, his sister Glenna and Don Thacker, of Ironton, and his best friends Steve and Lula Castle, of Galion.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Angie Hudson.
Graveside services will be held in Caledonia Cemetery on Friday, Oct. 7, 2016 at 3 p.m. Full military honors will be given by the U.S. Army and the Marion Joint Veterans organization.
