Eugene Spencer Owens Jr., 74, of Mansfield, passed away on Monday, September 12, 2016, at OhioHealth Mansfield.
Eugene was born on June 17, 1942, in Birmingham, Alabama. to Eugene S. Owens, Sr. and Erma D. (Taylor) Owens. He retired from AK Steel after 33 years of service. He enjoyed watching sports, playing the lottery, and spending time with his family and friends.
Eugene is survived by two children; Spencer Howard, of Dayton, and Eugenia Owens, of Mansfield; two step-sons, Frank Sutton and Christopher Brown, both of Mansfield; four brothers, Robert Owens, George Owens, both of Mansfield, Carlos Owens, and Dapries Owens, both of Columbus; one sister, Alesteen Johnson, of Alabama; five grandchildren, Trey Howard, Quinten Howard, Courtney Howard, all of South Carolina, Amyia Owens, and Shariya Owens, both of Mansfield; one great-grandchild, Darme Howard; two god-children, Lonnie Carter, of Mansfield, and Darious (Sharika) Carter, of Columbus; two special nieces, Yolanda Jackson of Alabama, and Dawn Powell-Owens, of Columbus; and special friends, Eileen Petty, Jerry Massey, Melvin Melton, Janice Owens, and Paul Mack.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Tony Jackson; one grandson, Cordarious Owens; three brothers, Paul Owens, Richard Owens, and Henry Owens; one sister, Mary Owens; one niece, Alveta Powell-Owens; and three close friends, Frank Petty, Willie Carter, and Pearline Petty.
Calling hours will be from 11 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at Greater Mitchell Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, 182 South Adams Street, Mansfield, Ohio, 44902. Funeral service will follow at noon at the church. Burial will follow at Mansfield Cemetery.
