Shirley E. Meiners Burry, 84, of Mansfield, died Thursday, September 8, 2016 after a short illness. Born September 22, 1931 in Covington, Kentucky, she was the daughter of Vernon and Lillian (Mussman) Fling.
Shirley was a loving and caring lady who dedicated her life to nursing and the pursuit of excellence. During her time as Vice President of Nursing, she developed many programs dedicated to the Mansfield community, two of which are the development of the Third Street Clinic and the Mansfield General Hospital Home Care and Hospice. She also served on several nursing associations.
During her lifetime, she had lived in Nova Scotia, North Carolina, Michigan, Williamsburg, Virginia, Maine, Ohio and Kentucky. She loved antiques, watching old movies, dancing, dogs and Christmas. She loved Christmas so much, she maintained a grapevine Christmas tree all year long. While living in Colonial Williamsburg, she was a volunteer at a Colonial Williamsburg shop and a secretary of a women’s prayer group and her condo association.
Shirley had the clearest blue eyes and a smile that lit up a room and will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband of 20 years, (Harry) Maxwell Burry; a daughter, Noelle (Randy) Powell; a son, Steve Meiners; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Jerome William Meiners; a daughter, Kimberly Riley; her dog, King Charles Spaniel-Tucker; a sister, Alice Jean Huenefeld; and her step father, Avon “Van” Hutson.
There will be no calling hours or services at this time. Memorial contributions may be made to OhioHealth Hospice or a trust fund for a scholarship of advancement of nursing education through OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital and can be sent to any Mechanic Bank location beginning Sept. 13.
