ASHLAND — Another day, another preseason ranking for Ashland University’s football team.

On Monday (Aug. 22), the Eagles landed at No. 7 in the 2016 D2Football.com Top 25 preseason poll. It is the fourth preseason Top 10 national ranking for AU, which also is slotted No. 6 in the 2016 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II Coaches’ Top 25 Preseason Poll, No. 3 in the Lindy’s Sports College Football National 2016 Preview preseason poll, and No. 8 in the 2016 Sporting News Division II Preseason Top 25 poll.

The Eagles also were chosen to repeat as Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference South Division champions in the 2016 GLIAC Football Preseason Coaches’ Poll.

Junior tight end Adam Shaheen was named a first-team D2Football.com preseason All-American. Shaheen, who caught a school-tight end-record 70 passes in 2015, already had been named first-team preseason All-America by both Football Gameplan and Lindy’s Sports.

Ashland will begin the 2016 season on Sept. 1 at 6 p.m. at Jack Miller Stadium/Martinelli Field against Mercyhurst. There will be a free-to-the-public Fan Fest on a closed-off section of Broad Street from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sept. 1 prior to kickoff.
