Ontario's Dominic Castlevetere tees off during the 2015 Richland County Junior Golf Tournament at The Woods.

MANSFIELD, Ohio — The top young golfers in the area will tee it up next week during the annual Richland County Junior Golf Tournament.

Longtime event organizer Dick Henry is expecting another big field when the tournament tees off at Twin Lakes Golf Course on Monday. The 36-hole event concludes Tuesday at The Woods at Possum Run.

“We have about 40 kids signed up right now, which is a little low, but we are expecting to get quite a few more. I had five kids stop in to sign up just this morning,” Henry said Tuesday afternoon at Twin Lakes. “I think we will have about 70 golfers by the time the tournament begins next week, which is about what we have had the past few years.

“Anyone who wants to sign up has until Friday.”

The former athletic director at Mansfield Senior and a longtime Ohio High School Athletic Association swimming official, Henry has been involved with the junior golf program for 36 years. He has organized the Richland County Junior Golf Tournament for the past 10 years.

“I would probably hand off the responsibilities to somebody else if I could find someone to replace me,” Henry joked.

The Richland County Junior Golf Tournament is actually two events. The first, for boys and girls age 13 to 18 is Monday and Tuesday. The second, for golfers age 8 to 12, will be an 18-hole, one-day event at Forest Hills Golf Club on Aug. 4.

The entry fee is $15 and the deadline to enter is 5 pm. Friday.

“We are expecting a great turnout,” Henry said. “We are looking forward to it.”
