Carol May Grove, 79, of Shelby died Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at her home after a short illness.
Carol was born Aug. 22, 1936 in Crawford County, Ohio the daughter of the late J. Edward and Florice (Green) Kiess. She was a 1954 graduate of Plymouth High School and was a graduate of The Ohio State University, where she received both a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Education.
Carol began her teaching career at Pioneer Joint Vocational School and then taught reading at Central School in the Shelby City School System. Carol retired as Facilitator of Academic Skilled Enrichment from The Ohio State University at Mansfield where she had taught psychology and was a counselor for over 25 years.
When her children were young, Carol as an Avon and Welcome Wagon representative. She was always busy supporting her children and grandchildren in their activities. Carol was a sports fan and an avid follower of The Ohio State Buckeyes and the Shelby Whippets.
She enjoyed traveling and especially liked flower gardening. She grew a wide variety of gladiolas and always had such an abundance that she gave them away to everyone she could. She and her husband Bob attended the Linn Road Church of The Brethren.
Carol is survived by her husband: Robert Earl Grove, whom she wed on Sept. 24, 1954; four children: Denny (Robin) Grove, of Shelby, Tom (Melissa) Grove, of Shelby, Patti (Steve) Hill, of Ashland, Ed Grove (Elizabeth Tucker), of Mansfield; 14 grandchildren: Katie Hemker, Betsy Ankrom, Chelsey Biesterveld, Tyler Grove, Josh Grove, Dannielle Barker, Jake Grove, Amanda Eshelman, Brian Hill, Alex Hill, Aimee Kovinchick, Parker Grove, Ellis Grove, Jennifer Grove; 12 great grandchildren: Reagan and Jack Hemker, Harrison Ankrom, Lincoln and Alden Biesterveld, Natalie, Katelyn and Samantha Grove, Isabelle Eshelman, Sebastian and Madelyn Barker, Livia and Graysen Grove; 2 sisters: Miriam (Benjamin) Kensinger of Plymouth, Linda Vanasdale (Rowan Cowell) of Findlay; two brothers: Charles Kiess of New Washington, Wayne (Janise) Kiess of Bucyrus.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Marilyn Hord; an infant brother and a grandson, Turner Bradley Grove.
Family and friends are welcome on Sunday, July 24, 2016 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 W. Main St., Shelby where funeral services will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. by Rev.
