Clifton Hughes, 79, of Mansfield, Ohio, passed away Friday morning, July 15, 2016, at Kindred Hospital.
He was born April 7, 1937, in Oberlin, Ohio, and his family then moved to Lorain, Ohio.
Clifton attended Lorain High School and worked at several jobs throughout his time there. He later moved to Mansfield, and worked at Westinghouse Corp. retiring after 29 years of service. He was a member of American Legion Post #676.
He was very outgoing and enjoyed playing various card games. Watching Western movies and fishing shows was his ultimate relaxation time. Clifton enjoyed staying active fishing and assembling model cars and airplanes. Air shows brought him special joy. Above all, traveling with his family and being a wonderful, loving, father and grandfather were his top priorities.
He is survived by nine children, Willie (Kathy) Likely, Linda Hughes, Marilyn Hughes, Kevin Hughes, Carlton Clifton Hughes, Bruce Hughes, Anthony Weatherspoon, David Weatherspoon and Debbie (James) Jones; a very, very special loving friend, Mary Young; two step children, Mark (Glynis) Rodgers and Sherry (Michael) Williams; four grandchildren, Willie, Mario, Dionte and Monique Hughes; and a host of other grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Clifton is also survived by siblings, Amy B. Holmes, Eva Brooks, and William Jenkins; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Williams and Queen Davis; and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mildred Hughes; son, Lee Weatherspoon; grandchildren, Solomon Hughes and Schmaiko Lanier; and siblings, Julie Jenkins and Delores Jenkins.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2016, at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Bruce Bond and Rev. Mark Cobbs officiating. Burial will be in Mansfield Cemetery.
