MANSFIELD — Seven young women earned scholarships on Friday night as the Miss Ohio Scholarship Pageant rolled through its second round of competition.
Poise, elegance, fitness, appearance and talent were the qualities on display at the Renaissance Theatre in Mansfield.
Miss Gabby Bailey earned $250 for the Poise and Elegance award.
Miss Veronica Gary was awarded $500 as a part of the Mina R. O’gwynn Award.
Sarah Kingsbury won the Freedom Spirit Award with a $250 scholarship.
Hannah Zimmerman was a double winner. She collected the Miss Photogenic award. She was also awarded $500 for winning the lifestyle fitness and swimsuit competition.
Zimmerman, 21, said she was excited to win the fitness competition because she enjoys running, dancing and gymnastics.
“I made the varsity track team when I was freshman, so I’m an avid runner,” Zimmerman said. “I like to live a very active lifestyle. That keeps me in shape for lifestyle and fitness.”
Zimmerman graduated this year from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in paralegal studies. She is going to get her Master’s degree in higher education and administration at Ohio University.
“And hopefully go into law school after the to pursue a career in policy work,” she said.
Alice Magato claimed $500 after winning the preliminary talent competition. For her talent, Magato sung “Astonishing” from Little Women.
Magato, 18, recently graduated from high school. She said she is using her run at Miss America to push her platform of sharing ways to fix lack of self-esteem in women.
“I recently overcame a very dark time in my life where I really struggled with self-esteem,” she said. “I was able to overcome that — fortunately enough. I know the three steps I took to overcome my dark times and I’m ready to share that with the world.
“I’m ready to take on this job (Miss America) and use my crown as a megaphone.”
Magato will be a freshman at Chapman University where she wants to study political science.
“I think to night went fabulous,” said Zimmerman. “We had a lot of downtime, but the fluidness of the production team, the staff, the crew — they made it go flawless.”
