GALION — What’s happening Crawford County?
The Richland Source has big plans to increase its footprint in Crawford County, specifically the Galion area. That’s where I come into the picture.
I have lived in Galion most of my life, since the early 1960s. Many reading this may not have been born when I first arrived in Galion, which means I’ve been a writer and editor for a lot of years, but it also means I have a different perspective than many — if not most — when it comes to my home town.
Aside from some time in Columbus after my Ohio State days and some time in Medina, it’s been all-Galion, pretty much all the time.
At the Richland Source I’ll cover the Galion area specifically, and Crawford County as a whole. I also will write business stories in Mansfield and beyond and whatever else comes my way. I’ll do some editing.
So, if you have story ideas, send an email to russ@richlandsource.com or leave a message at 330-421-6920.
What type of news am I looking for? Anything interesting: sports; government; business stories, both old and new; education; human interest, public events, life-happenings.
If you have an idea, I’d love to hear it. I won’t be able to follow through on every suggestion, but those suggestions will go on a list and if I can get to them in a timely fashion, I shall do so.
Galion has kind of fallen through the cracks in recent years in terms of getting news coverage outside of the city. Bad news always warrants attention, but I’m also looking for good news. In fact, I love good news. I’d much rather write a positive story than something negative.
Having grown up in Galion, I realize that chat about this community is more negative than positive … the companies that have closed or relocated; houses that have remained vacant for too many years; blighted areas; rough roads.
But I know there are a lot of positive things going on in this community. The school district has been recognized for its success; our public parks are much better than in many other cities; the downtown area has been spruced up through the years; and there’s a large group that works tirelessly to keep Galion’s history alive (Gill House, Bishop Brown’s home and more).
But in Galion, as in most cities, it’s the people who make a community a worthwhile place to live and work. And I know there are a lot of folks in this city who spend their free time making the lives of others better. I love those types of stories, and readers do, too.
As far as my business beat in Mansfield, my writing could include features, profiles, local trends and anything else business related. So … let me know your ideas. Email russ@richlandsource.com or leave a message at 330-421-6920 and let me know what you are thinking.
