MANSFIELD — The FIRST Robotics Competition Team Stellar Robotics took second place at the state championship event on Saturday in Worthington.

The local squad, made up largely of north central Ohio students, was one of 24 of the state’s top teams gathered at Worthington Kilbourne High School.

Stellar has earned two awards this season, along with top-four rankings in each of their three events.

“Doing well in our second season gives credibility to our team,” said team mentor Christopher DeYoe. “It wasn’t a fluke that we did well our first season.”

Moving forward, the team will be participating in off-season events to train a new drive team.

“Our current driver is a senior, so now we rebuild for the future,” explained DeYoe.

The team is also challenging team members’ skills by making student-led modifications to the second identical robot they built this season.

The public will see Stellar Robotics this summer, along with their elementary and junior high teams, at events at the public library system and at the Richland County Fair.

As the team prepares for their third year, they’d like to improve their skills in programming.

“But we need to bring in knowledgeable mentors in order to do this,” says Orion DeYoe, one of the team’s founders.

Time commitment is flexible. Contact the team at stellarrobotics@gmail.com or 419-929-8558 if you’d like to apply as a programming mentor.

The team is also taking applications for new student members. Visit www.firstroboticsmansfield.com to apply.
