Charles R. “Chike” McBride, 93, of Loudonville and formerly of Ashland, died Tuesday afternoon May 3, 2016 in Colonial Manor Health Care Center, Loudonville after a short illness.
Chike was born Oct. 14, 1922 in Cambridge. He was the son of Lawrence and Violet (Ricer) McBride.
He was a Perrysville High School graduate who served with the U.S/ Army during World War II. Following his return from active duty he began his career as a barber, opening McBride Barber Shop, Perrysville until retiring in 1980.
He also owned and operated McBride’s Drive-In on State Route 95 at Pleasant Hill Lake, for many years. Chike was an accomplished musician able to play the mandolin, guitar and banjo. When he was 12, he and his brother Russell formed a group that played often on radio in Zanesville. They were about ready to embark on an extensive tour when his father accepted a position as the first dam keeper at Pleasant Hill Lake. Chike and his family grew up on and around the lake from its beginnings in the 1930’s.
Chike is survived by his wife, Jane M. Weltmer Haynes McBride, whom he married in 1982; his daughter, Shelley (Gregory) Mauk, of Bellville; his grandson, Christian (Jillian) Mauk, of Columbus; a step-son, Harold “Pete” Haynes, of Wooster; two step-grandsons; numerous step-great grandchildren; and four sisters: Verna Riffle, Irma Whittemire, Lana McBride, all of Ashland, and Sandra Markham, of Lucas. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Russell and William McBride.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at 2 p.m. in Greenlawn Cemetery, Perrysville with Rev. Howard Burnett officiating where military honors will be conducted by the Loudonville American Legion and Perrysville VFW. Friends may call Tuesday from 1 to 2 p.m. in Lindsey Funeral Home, Loudonville.
