GALION — The City of Galion’s reconstruction project for Portland Way South will resume on Monday, March 14.
Detour signs are up now and equipment is moving in as the road closes to complete the project. Buckeye Excavating & Construction and Smith Concrete, the project contractors, will begin construction on the final three phases of the project.
Project Engineer Lyn Makeever explained that work will start with the middle section of the remaining project area, from Henry Street north to Maple Heights Drive. The contractors will finish curbs, gutters, and underdrains, then begin excavation to construct the new road way.
They will then move to the section from Rosewood Avenue north to Grove Avenue. The final section of the project is from Monnett New Winchester Road (north of the railroad tracks) to Henry Street.
Portland Way South will be closed until the project is finished. The final three phases are expected to last three months, depending on the weather.
There will be no through traffic permitted during construction; please follow the posted detour signs. Although both lanes will be closed, local traffic will be accommodated so that residents within the project area can access their driveways.
The reconstruction project began last fall. Total cost was estimated at $1.6 million, paid for by $1,155,256 in local resources as well as an Ohio Public Works grant/loan in the combined amount of $500,000.
