Mary L. Court had a special talent for telling stories to “her” children at the Galion Public Library. She was devoted to her family and loved reading books. Her true passion was passing her love of reading and history onto children. Mary passed away Saturday morning, March 12, 2016 after a 3½-year battle with cancer at the age of 71.

Born April 16, 1944 in Galion, she was the daughter of Howard L. and Anna (Sheffer) Deppen.

Mary first met J. Douglas Court in the seventh grade, but their relationship would not develop until high school. Mary married her high school sweetheart Jan. 29, 1966 and it would last 50 years.

Mary was a graduate of Galion High School in 1962 and Bluffton University in 1966 with a degree in Elementary Education.

Mary was a lifelong member of First United Church of Christ in Galion where she served as Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Elder, Historian, Chair of the Mission Committee and President of Women’s Guild. She served as president of the Galion Historical Society and was the Galion Public Library’s Children’s Librarian for over 20 years.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by children Jeffrey Court, of Galion, Ben and Brandi (Rios) Court, of Cuyahoga Falls and Jon and Christine (Tyger) Court, of Wooster; grandchildren Julie, Mary, Danielle, Samuel, Madison and Anna; brother James and Ruth Anna (Ritchey) Deppen, of Ashland, sister Ruth and Fred Engleson, of Leesburg, Florida and sister-in-law Arlene Deppen, of Trumbull, Connecticut.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by brother John Deppen and daughter-in-law Shannon (Lobsenz) Court.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 18, 2016 at the First United Church of Christ, 248 Harding Way West Galion, Ohio 44833 where a Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 19 with Rev. Darrin Harvey officiating.

Mary has donated her body to the Ohio University Anatomical Department.
