MANSFIELD — The first of six planned beautification projects commenced Tuesday with the planting of six hackberry trees on West Fourth Street, between Walnut Street and Mulberry Street.
Doug Versaw, convener of the Richland County Development Group Beautification Sector, said these will be downtown Mansfield’s first hackberry trees. He said they’re taking the place of six dead or dying trees that were removed by city workers last week.
Rex’s Landscaping and Construction did the planting. “They’ve been great to work with,” Versaw praised.
This project was paid for by grant funds from the Richland County Foundation.
In late January, the beautification sector announced that it had received a $33,610 grant from the Richland County Foundation to assist with six beautification projects.
“The (Park Avenue East) subway is going to be the big one,” Versaw said of the beautification projects.
The subway area will be spruced up with some new paint and landscaping. Versaw said that project should begin in the next couple of weeks.
