GALION, Ohio – Grant Garverick was sworn in as the newest member of the Galion City Schools board of education during Thursday night’s meeting.
Re-elected members Brian Carson, Dennis Long and Brian Owens were also sworn in for their new terms. Long was elected as president and Brian Carson as vice president for 2016.
Other board member committee appointments included: Long as the Legislative Liaison, Jennifer Kuns as Delegate to the Ohio School Boards Association, Owens as Student Achievement Liaison, Garverick to the Galion Area Betterment Commission, Long as representative to Pioneer Career Technology Center Board, Carson and Owens to Labor Relations Committee, Garverick and Long to OAPSE Labor Relations Committee and Kuns and Carson to Audit Committee and Policy Committee.
The Board approved the first reading of the 2016-2017 district calendar. The next regular meeting will be the second reading for the calendar and an opportunity for community input.
Board members were treated to refreshments by the 7th grade Cheerleading squad and also reviewed the art work and displays of gratitude from Galion Middle School students that decorated the computer lab.
January is designated as School Board Recognition Month to build awareness and understanding of the vital function an elected board of education plays in our society, and honors the members of Ohio’s 719 city, exempted village, local and joint vocational boards of education and educational service centers governing boards for their commitment to providing quality public education to Ohio’s school children.
Galion Middle School Principal Jennifer Allerding provided an in-depth report about the positive changes taking place in her building.
Superintendent Jim Grubbs provided the board with a report that highlighted new programs taking place in the district and different projects he is working on with other community leaders.
