Avery F. Alfrey, 81, of Shelby, died peacefully at home with his wife and daughters by his side, Friday, Jan. 15, 2016.
Born April 7, 1934, in Shiloh, to Luther and Roxie (Ramey) Alfrey, he was a Shelby resident all of his life.
A 1953 graduate of Shelby High School, Avery served his country in the U.S. Army. He worked at the Tuby for 30 years retiring in 1996.
Avery loved being in the outdoors, whether he was fishing, hunting arrowheads, digging for ginseng or shooting trap.
He is survived by his wife, Miriam (Steele) Alfrey, whom he married July 31, 1961; two daughters, Deb (Patrick) DelTurco, of Tiffin, and Becky (Mark) Coe, of Shelby; two grandchildren, Nicole (Geoff) Bortel and Patrick Wilcox and several step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Jean Hoskins and two brothers, Robert Sr. and W. Carl Alfrey.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 18, 2016 at the Barkdull Funeral Home and Crematory in Shelby. Pastor Dave Davenport will officiate with interment in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Shiloh. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail.
