SHELBY, Ohio (UPDATED: 3:07 p.m.) – A murder and attempted suicide took place on Saturday morning at the Crestwood Care Center, according to authorities.
The Shelby Police Department, along with the Richland County Sheriff’s Office, Shelby Fire Department, and Community Emergency Medical Services, responded to the double-shooting after a 911 call was placed at approximately 11:44 a.m.
According to a Shelby Police Department news release, authorities arrived at the scene to find an elderly female resident dead in her room. She was apparently killed by a gunshot. Her husband was located next to her in a reclining chair suffering from what “appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”
Shelby Police Chief M. Lance Combs said in an email this is an “open homicide investigation at this point.”
“We are the lead,” Combs said. “BCI (Bureau of Criminal Investigation) was called to request their crime scene unit – they have additional resources to collect scene evidence to assist in our investigation.
“When it’s completed and reviewed by the prosecutor, we will release additional details.”
He added that he didn’t have the ages of the victims and was unable to provide details about the gun used.
The husband was immediately attended to and ultimately taken by Life Flight to a Columbus hospital. According to the release, the couple was discovered by a nurse’s aide making routine rounds in the facility.
The Richland County Coroner and Richland County Prosecutor were notified and BCI was contacted to process the crime scene at 225 West Main St. in Shelby.
According to the release, preliminary investigations indicate this was a homicide and attempted suicide and further information may be made available once the extended family has been notified and after the Richland County Coroner and the Richland County Prosecutor have been consulted.
No other details were immediately available.
